Rep. Sally Kern’s ugly anti-gay speech is made public on the internet
By jmb | March 7, 2008
Updated at 4:17 p.m.
Victoryfund.org: Audio recording from speech by Oklahoma State Rep. Sally Kern

Here are a few quotes from Rep. Kern’s hateful speech…
Studies show, no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted for more than, you know, a few decades. . .
I honestly think it’s the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam. . .
They want to get them into the government schools so they can indoctrinate them . . . They are going after our young children, as young as two years of age, to try to teach them that the homosexual lifestyle is an acceptable lifestyle.
You know, Gays are infiltrating city councils. . . Did you know that the city council of Eureka Springs is now controlled by gays? . .
. They are winning elections. We have the gay-straight alliance coming into our schools. . .
One of my colleagues said We don’t have a gay problem in our community… well you know what, that is so dumb. If you have cancer in your little toe, do you just say that I’m going to forget about it since the rest of you is fine? It spreads! This stuff is deadly and it is spreading. It will destroy our young people and it will destroy this nation.
This is why it is critical that folks speak out against gay hate speech. Sure Rep. Sally Kern has the right to be hateful and to say hateful things (as long as she doesn’t threaten people), but she doesn’t have the right to stay in the legislature. The people have got to speak up and vote her out of office, or better yet the legislature should impeach her and remove her from office. I see this as being no different than a state legislator coming out of the closet as a rabid racist and supporter of the KKK.
It must be made clear that it is wrong to refer to people made in the Image of God, as being a “cancer”, as being “worse than the terrorists or Islam” (and let’s not attack Muslim people either, but I guess Rep. Kern is a bigot in more than one way). This kind of speech is SICK AND WRONG.
I would encourage folks to call Ms. Kern and let her know that hate is not an Oklahoma value (and for that matter isn’t a Christian value either).
Her contact info (taken from the OK state house website) is:
(405) 557-7348
sallykern@okhouse.gov
2713 Sterling Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73127
Updated at 4:17 p.m.: Oh boy, I forgot that Sally Kern was the same person who also wanted to mandate the creation of a “State Library Material Content Advisory Board” that would keep pro-gay books out of the hands of children. (thanks to Dustbury.com for this link
Don’t worry though. According to the Dustbury story from 2006, Kern insists that “I’m not a Nazi. I believe in free speech. But for every right we have, there is a responsibility.”
Yeah right. I think Hitler would have loved her anti-gay speech. He loved to scapegoat folks too

Hooray for Sally Kern for telling the truth.
March 7th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Ms Kerns’s comments are NOT hate speech but merely the truth that society continues to ignore at our collective peril. The demise of the Romans and the Greeks a millenium or two ago attests to this. Whether she has exact facts from the Bible is irrelevant - the facts are in the study of history which we may be doomed to repeat. Those that think she is not speaking in the public interest are deluding themselves to maintain an agenda in their own self-interest. And - she is being contacted to tell her she is correct on this issue.
March 7th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
THIS JUST MAKES ME SOOOO SICK THAT PEOPLE REALLY THINK LIKE THIS. I AM SOOO HURT!!!! IGNORANCE REALLY DOES LIVE!!!
March 8th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Ridiculous. Her vague historical assertions make no sense at all and hold no water with anyone even *slightly* familiar with their history books. She’s an old-school, ignorant bigot, and it’s our job to educate her. Send her an email letting her know how *completely* unacceptable her hate-speech is at sallykern@okhouse.gov. I pay the same taxes as everyone else; how dare you treat me as a second-class citizen?
March 8th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
“They want to get them into the government schools so they can indoctrinate them . . . They are going after our young children, as young as two years of age, to try to teach them that the homosexual lifestyle is an acceptable lifestyle.
You know, Gays are infiltrating city councils. . . Did you know that the city council of Eureka Springs is now controlled by gays? . .”
Oh yeah, that’s Biblical sound (eyes rolling.) If a racist pointed out the HIV rate in the African-American or distorted the number of black men in prisons to make the claim that black people are inferior, we would be (justifiably) up in arms.
But because she can hide her lies behind the Bible, Rep. Kerns seems to have some support.
Hiding behind the Bible is NO EXCUSE for lies and propaganda not matter what ANYONE thinks it says about homosexuality.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
In response to X’s statement: ”
Ms Kerns’s comments are NOT hate speech but merely the truth that society continues to ignore at our collective peril. The demise of the Romans and the Greeks a millenium or two ago attests to this. . .”
I’m curious what history book you got this from. This is a very interesting hypothesis. I don’t ever recall reading that the fall of the Greek and Roman empires had anything to do with homosexuality.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
those of you who are defending the representative’s statements are simply ignorant (as is she). people in this country, and especially Oklahoma, should be ashamed that such an uneducated, misinformed, and irresponsible person has been elected to a public office.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
and I’m pretty sure Greek and Roman civilizations lasted longer than “you know, a few decades”.
these comments are not based on facts, so there’s no point in trying to counter them from an intellectual standpoint. it’s just sad, sad people who need to blame somebody, anybody for whatever’s wrong in theit lives. The Nazi Germany analogy was perfect.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
this woman is a lunatic.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
who gives a **** what the bible says?
it’s about wrong and right.
and this idiot is certainly wrong.
March 8th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
I wonder if she realizes her words sound eerily familiar and echo sentiments from men who opposed womens right to vote at the turn of the century…
I do feel badly for her - she has kept her true beliefs silent and hidden until now, and for good reason - America’s collective view have changed, and hers hasn’t. Her time for change is now.
“Death comes equally to us all, and makes us all equal when it comes.”
March 8th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Also, in reply to Mortimer Pernsquat’s statement:
“Ms Kerns’s comments are NOT hate speech but merely the truth that society continues to ignore at our collective peril. The demise of the Romans and the Greeks a millenium or two ago attests to this. . .”
You sir or madam, must have the education and higher reasoning skills of a poorly trained chimp. If you’re a religiously motivated bigot, or uncomfortable enough with your own sexuality that you have to attack that of others, then just say it; don’t try and cite historical precedence when you lack the applicable level of intelligence.
The Classic-era empires did not fall due to homosexuality (in fact did you know that Roman politic corruption and tyranny played a large part in its fall?sound familiar - *cough* Republican bigots). Also, not all Grecian societies embraced homosexual behavior.
Besides, merely pointing out a common feature between two things doesn’t justify that as the means to their end. Therefore, your statement is childish and doesn’t stand up against simple, logical argument.
For instance, I could say that togas were the downfall of these empires, since they were worn extensively by both cultures. One can also see evidence of this in “Animal House”, a film in which a “toga party” leads to the demise of a college fraternity.
Long story short, you’re an idiot, I’m surprised you figured out how to type.
March 8th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
Welcome to America, kids. Not only do you have to hide who you are and your sexuality , you DEFINITELY not aloud to ever talk about it, or write about it.
My favorite part about her speech is when she talks about cancer in your toe and the fact that cancer spreads. I guess it had just passed me by that the GAY is a disease that is contagious and transmittable.
OF COURSE also, all gay people are also child molesters. Because i’m straight, every little boy I see is attractive? No. So why would little boys be attractive to gay men?
THIS IGNORANCE IS WHAT WILL BE THE DEMISE OF OUR COUNTRY.

Hi, this is Rena, another Oklahoma progressive blogger, and I do admin work here at James’ blog. I just want to add a welcome to those readers who are coming over from Pam’s House Blend and Exgaywatch blog (and maybe others).
Please know that while there is way too much bigotry in our state, and it’s way over-represented by our elected officials, there are a lot of progressives here too.
We have thriving Peace Houses in both Oklahoma City and Tulsa, a GI Rights Hotline, many other peace and justice groups, and also some elected folks who are openly gay, like Corporation Commissioner Jim Roth, or openly pro-gay, like state Senator Andrew Rice.

So if ugliness would spread, can we get rid of her?
March 8th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Three little words describe Sally Kern: [Obscenity deleted by admin — anger understandable, but responding to it with more ugly offensive and oppressive language is not appreciated here.]
March 8th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
” My talk was to a Republican group and I was speaking about the homosexual agenda to defeat conservative Republicans. They want to silence anyone who does not approve their lifestyle. They want their freedom but don’t want those who disagree to have their freedom.”
this was in the alleged letter from the post #18.
Funny how she’s talking about the “homosexual agenda” to silence conservative Republicans, when obviously she’s trying to do the same to LGBQT community.
[More obscene and sexist language removed by admin.]
March 8th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
It’s about time someone stood up for what is right. If it were natural to be gay then why don’t gay people give birth with their acts. Anyone who believes in God and His Word knows this is wrong. The rest will answer some day for themselves.
March 8th, 2008 at 10:52 pm
“then why don’t gay people give birth with their acts?” In many ways we do. The GLBT community has “given birth” to some of the most gifted artists, musicians, and some of the worlds most powerful leaders (i.e. Alexander the Great). Another way we “give birth” is by adopting children (where it’s PERMITTED) that were abandoned and rejected by their families and society–HETEROSEXUAL SOCIETY, that is. Maybe God created Gay people and Straight people to live together in harmony–helping each other, not hurting.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:32 pm
Isn’t it interesting thet Rep. Kern is being crucified for what she said (and believes) and yet everyone of us is doing the same - saying what we believe. Isn’t that what America is all about - saying what we believe? Are we all suppose to agree with one another? Can we not agree to disagree without the bad language?
March 8th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
This woman would play great in Iran…lets send her there.
March 8th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
****ING *****!!
March 9th, 2008 at 12:04 am
I believe in freedom of speech, I also believe that to hold office one should exercise restraint . This woman is not fit for office.
March 9th, 2008 at 1:47 am
well she’s right. societies do dissolve. doors open up and societies go boom. that’s the whole idea. social evolution. permissiveness destroys societies. that’s what it’s supposed to do. the society created by our kids should be better than the one made by our parents. etc etc.
March 9th, 2008 at 4:52 am
She’s entitled to say what she wants to say but that doesn’t necessarily mean that its smart. I don’t believe that people NEED to be tolerant but I do believe they should. One’s preference is not a reflection of their character. I’m sure we all know of a straight jerk and a sweet homosexual person. Its unfortunate that the people we put in charge to run our nation can be so close minded and hateful. I think that’s the more heartbreaking reality. Its disgusting how a large group of people left England to escape religious intolerance only to come to another land and do the exact same thing and then hide behind the Bible and use it as a sort of justification. People need to realize that just because a man loves another man and a woman loves another woman doesn’t mean they’re not people either.
Also, what happened to that defined separation between church and state. I think that needs to be reinforced so those we entrust to run this country can determine what to do without getting blinded by their own personal agenda and beliefs.
March 9th, 2008 at 5:01 am
And someone needs to take a refresher course in world history. This country is getting stupider and stupider every day. I’m almost afraid for tomorrow. The Greek and Roman Empires lasted for years and did not fall because of homosexuality. I think anyone running for any office should be placed on that “Smarter than a fifth grader” or whatever that show is called. If you can’t outsmart a fifth grader then you are certainly not fit to be in office.
March 9th, 2008 at 10:16 am
Wow! Some of you are just as stupid as she is. It’s amazing that people are actually defending what she said based on free speech. She can say whatever hateful crap she wants behind closed doors but not when you are a representative of your state and the people in it. She should be fired! By the way, some of you haters need to go out into the real world where diversity exists. I know it’s easy to hate from your tiny towns where you all look and sound the same, but it’s really pathetic, grow up.
March 9th, 2008 at 10:43 am
This is one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard. And to think she’s active in politics. I hope she realizes how many people were affected by her anti-gay rant. She is a terrible person and should not be in office. Oklahoma, I hope you let Sally know she’s an embarassment to your state.
March 9th, 2008 at 10:51 am
Hate is a Christians family value. Thank you for reminding all Americans. It’s sad when our country has to hear unintelligent, bigoted hicks come out and spread hate crimes against fellow Americans!
March 9th, 2008 at 11:34 am
Just when I think our political leaders have gone as low as they can and made Oklahoma look like a refuge fo pea-brained idiot hicks, Ms Kerns goes about 10 steps lower.
On the other hand I have been proved wrong. I though W and Cheney were the worst government leaders of my lifetime. Ms K has shown she is worse.
March 9th, 2008 at 11:43 am
It is very sad and unfortunate that the United States has a person of this caliber as a representative for the American people. We hear about Islamic extremists and terrorists on the news and from the current administration on a daily basis which has created fear, hate, war and many negative feelings. We should be equally concerned about people like Sally Kern who advocates hate and disregard for people that she does not understand. She can practice whatever wacky religion she wants but has no right to dictate to the American people her twisted beliefs. Whatever happened to ‘SEPARATION OF STATE AND RELIGION’?? MS KERN, HOMOSEXUALITY IS NOT THE PROBLEM - YOU ARE THE PROBLEM!!!!
March 9th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
she spoke the truth! people should leave her alone!
March 9th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
The sad thing isn’t just that Sally believes this way, it’s that so many, if not most, in her district feel the exact same way. I have no doubt that Sally is now insulating herself with like-minded people from her church and community. She will learn nothing from all of this.
March 9th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
It’s obvious that most on this site embrace only their own ideals. “Hate is a Christian value”? Where did that come from. Facts on the Bible do not constitute hate. Who said anything about hating someone? I’ve heard disagreement but not hate. I don’t agree with a lot of things, but I don’t hate everything. And a woman and a man make a birth happen, sorry. Yes there are many heterosexuals that don’t deserve having kids, I agree with you on that. We disagree on this issue but I hate no one. I respect your opinion and would hope you would do the same. And for sending her to Iran, try pushing this argument over there and you won’t get an argument, they are very less tolerant. Everyone has the right to believe what they wish, without pushing it on other people. We all need to take a breath and think about the other person before attacking them. Personal opinion is just that. Maybe we could all learn a little tolerance.
March 9th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
“Welcome to America, kids. Not only do you have to hide who you are and your sexuality , you DEFINITELY not aloud to ever talk about it, or write about it.”
Oh give me a f*cking break. Yeah, in America you can’t talk or write about being gay. Which is why this site was immediately shut down, and I don’t know any gays who are walking around openly anywhere in the country, much less in Oklahoma. They’re all dead due to torture in federal prisons.
This woman is an ignorant tw*t. Comments like yours aren’t much better.
March 9th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Only consolation here is…her career will mirror Anita Bryant. Look what such stupidity did for her!
March 9th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
Ignorant idiot.
End of story.
Case closed.
March 9th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Just wanted to say that I disagree strongly with the statement “hate is a Christian family value.” I know it was probably meant to be somewhat tongue in cheek, but the blanket nature of it I think is troubling.
Jesus spoke clearly against hate and called humankind to love all people, no matter what, without exceptions. It is a shame that some have twisted scriptures to back up a hateful viewpoint, but I don’t think you can possibly argue from Jesus’ life and teachings that hate is the answer.
March 9th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
This should go without saying, but I don’t allow sexist language in my comments (i.e. the word b****h), even if you are using said sexist language to attack a homophobic bigot.

Mortimer, the Roman Empire collapsed after it converted to Christianity. As for Greek civilisation, it lasted for hundreds of years and gave the world democracy, philosophy, mathematics, theatre, literature and some fabulous architecture and sculpture that survives to the present day. Not bad for a civilisation that able to accept that some people are born gay …
March 10th, 2008 at 8:21 am
Moderator’s note: I decided to leave this comment unedited. It contains extremely offensive anti-gay language, but I left it as is because it makes one of my points, that there are plenty of homophobes who agree with Rep. Sally Kern. Very, very disturbing - JMB
Y’know, I hear blame and I hear “WOW” and I hear disgust with what this brave, forthright, prepared to speak her mind like an American is supposed to be able to, woman has said. What she has said is the absolute truth, and the real fascists are the ones who want her to shut up, would scream and bark at her for bravely speaking her mind.
She’s absolutely right in what she’s said. When 2% of this nations population can rule in our courts and ruin our television with their rhetoric, and FORCE the rest of the population to accept their abominable ideals and sexuality, there’s a problem.
Now, she said it’s the right of gays and lesbians to be gays and lesbians but, just like I wouldn’t do it doggie style with my girl in public, and just like I don’t go screaming about doing it doggie style with my girl even in the bedroom, I don’t want to hear about it or see it from the gay and lesbian community.
The simple fact of the matter is you people are screaming over a subject you really have no right to scream over, but since you are allowed by law in the United States to post whatever comments you want, just as I am allowed to do and am doing, now, Mrs. Kern has the absolute right to say what she wants to say.
Because gays and lesbians are so fervent in their desire to see themselves as married couples in this nation, their lifestyle, their lack of morality, and their inability to see what they are doing is harmful to this nation and to my children, my family will suffer, and my ability to have rights as a married person are already in jeopardy.
Gays and lesbians, like married couples, should keep their fudge-packing and pole-smoking to themselves and stop doing everything they can to turn this nation, which is already in jeopardy because of them, on its head.
For those of you who believe that this sort of thinking is wrong-headed, and are surprised these sorts of thoughts are outdated, outmoded, and should be marked as hate speech, and illegal, consider what you’re saying and why you’re angry. As early as two decades ago, being gay and lesbian was considered, and rightly so, abominable behavior, by even non-Christians; the common man on the street and the common woman in her home thought about one man shoving his dick in another man’s ass and would be ready to vomit, as I still am in this day and age.
Homosexuality is not a genetic marker or disease or disorder and is not passed from parents or grandparents to their children, it is a choice. Don’t force your choices on me just because you want to be politically correct and believe that you are being “tolerant”.
Blacks being given their freedom was right… women being given their freedom was right… except look at what both groups have done with that freedom since. Blacks kill each other on a daily basis over drugs and territory that doesn’t belong to them, and women fight every single day to take children away from their fathers in a divorce and custody court system that favors women 92% of the time.
You good people, with your opinions, need to take a look at what you are doing to this nation on a daily basis because of your definition of “tolerance”, and you need to understand that you are shaping the wholly negative future of this country, rather than just stumbling blindly along this path because it’s someone else’s idea of the “right thing to do”.
Good day.
March 10th, 2008 at 8:34 am
homosexuality may be wrong. i am not disagreeing with that stance.
What i think IS so amazing is that this lady, and many other shining stars who posted on this comment wall, are perfect, pristine, and infallible; thus making it acceptable to cast the first stone against someone else.
i’ll take gay people over murderers, child abusers, thieves, terrorists, racists, wife-beaters and confederate flag waivers any day. some people need to pull the plank out of their eye before judging someone else.

Here’s a story from a Lawton TV station…
http://www.kswo.com/Global/story.asp?S=7989704
March 10th, 2008 at 8:35 am
Okay, here’s the thing that bigots like Sally Kern (sexuality based) and bigots who hate Christians don’t get: nowhere within the Bible is a prohibition against homosexuality, and nowhere within the Bible can one logically be inferred. For what it’s worth, I am monistic panentheist, religion-wise, but I actually bothered to read the Bible to see what all the fuss is about. Here’s the deal: in Leviticus, in the Old Testament, there is a very specific prohibition against going to pagan temples and paying the prostitutes who lived there for sex. As with most written works of the time, this prohibition was written by men, directed at men, and about men. This is where the notion that homosexuality is bad comes from. It makes no sense to me to cast this huge net from one statement outlining a very specific scenario. And here’s the rub: also within this same chapter of Leviticus are many of the dietary prohibitions that compose the Kosher laws that Orthodox Jews abide by. So, logically speaking, if you are going to say that being gay goes against God’s law, (which, as I pointed out, is a dubioius assertion at best) then you best not eat shrimp, or bacon, or cheeseburgers, because eating unclean food is at least as big a “toe cancer” as homosexuality is, as far as the Old Testament is concerned. (Oh, and don’t even get me started on Sodom and Gommorah. All manner of sin caused God to destroy Sodom and Gommorah, certainly not limited to homosexual behavior, and anyone who says otherwise hasn’t actually bothered to read the whole story.) Also, the whole notion of Christianity is built on the concept that Jesus came along and tweaked all the Old Testament laws and rules: no more animal sacrifice, for just one example. And, instead of 10 commandments, Jesus gave only one, which is “love one another”. So, yeah, the false god that these bigots claim to worship, is, by their own standard, completely fictional. Pretty crazy of them, huh? What these fundamentalists don’t realize is that while they are trying to hurt their homosexual brothers and sisters, what they are actually doing is hurting Christianity with their hate and hypocrisy. Oh, and Sally? If you want to take everything in the Bible so literally, if that’s what such a good Christian does, why is your hair short? And why, in your government photos, it your head uncovered? Those prohibitions are in Corinthians, which is in the New Testament. So maybe you aren’t concerned with what you perceive as God’s rules after all. Maybe you are just hate-driven, prejudice filled person who hides behind whatever bogus justification she can find.
March 10th, 2008 at 8:42 am
My being gay does not affect a single person in the world except for me. You don’t have to like the idea of two men or two women being together romantically, but for God’s sake, keep it to yourself! What’s the point in causing such a commotion? Your ignorant and bigotted oppinion is not going to change me. You will NEVER get rid of us, so why not just shut up and move on with your lives? You don’t see us out there protesting straight rights or straight marriage or straight happiness, so why are people so adamant about protesting ours? Just leave us alone and let us live our lives the way we want to. Who I happen to love has no affect on you whatsoever…will NEVER have any kind of negative impact on your life. Additionally, being gay does not make you incapable of of holding any kind of political office. To say that gays should not be allowed to run for office is absolutely ridiculous. It makes absolutely no sense to me.
March 10th, 2008 at 9:18 am
There is no place for that type of backward and bred thinking in today’s politics. She is entitled to her OWN opinions, but has no right to enforce that on others. Her personal opinions have no place in an office of legislature. People like this really drive me crazy. They condemn religious extremists, but what are they? Gays, blacks, Muslims, Mexicans, etc. are granted every right that white Christians are and if you don’t like that then move to China or some other country where the government can intervene on your personal life.
March 10th, 2008 at 9:26 am
What hatred….I am from California and - well - the movie ‘Deliverance’ comes to mind…..hummmm - and this is probably someone who thinks her God just thinks it is AOK to act so as a devil. It is fine to have opinions, it is not fine to promote hatred. And to think she is a teacher? I suspect she is a teacher of hatred!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We in California are far more sophisticated and frankly this woman would be gone from office. Wake up Oaklahoma and do not support this hate monger!

Hate speech hurts. Whether it is towards gays, blacks, whites, reds, etc. You get my drift. It is disturbing to think this woman sits in a government office and is able to say things like this. It is one thing to feel a certain way it is another thing to make others feel less important because you are vocal about your hatred towards them. I am sad that America can’t get over the fact that people are gay. So what? People are black too. People are white. People have Down’s syndrome. It’s as simple as that. PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT! Land of the free? Land of IGNORANCE is more like it.

Oklahoma is full of losers like Sally Kern, who pretend they stand for moral righteousness when all they really stand for is making the state look like the third world. Kansas is the same way.
March 10th, 2008 at 11:20 am
This woman’s ugly remarks reflect horribly not only on the state of Oklahoma, but on our nation.
The only people I have ever known to push an agenda or a lifestyle are the right-wing Christian fundamentalists. What they too often seem to forget is that not all Americans are Christians who believe that the bible is the word of God.
As for her equating homosexuality with terrorism? Tell that to the families of the victims of the Oklahoma City bombing and September 11.
Sally Kern is a perfect example of what is wrong with America. She is a national disgrace.
Shame on her!
March 10th, 2008 at 11:21 am
Gays are more dangerous than terrorists or muslim extremists huh? My experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan cause me to doubt this. I’d give Mrs. Kern five minutes in most Baghdad suburbs and she’d be begging to go to Burning Man or lead a gay pride parade.
March 10th, 2008 at 11:22 am
The only “society” which has lasted for only a few decades that I can think of in recent times is Nazi Germany and they gassed homosexuals along with a whole lot of other people they didn’t like. It is not homosexuality, but hate that causes the downfall of societies. I have to wonder sometimes if these evangelicals are reading a book with the words “The Bible” pasted over where the words “Mein Kampf” used to be.

March 10th, 2008 at 11:51 am
This is what i emailed the Racist Sally Kern, if she had said something like this about some other minority, she would be forced to resign….and to all you so called christians, learn your stuff before u deal it
I am a 33 year old single lesbian mother of a beautiful and brillant
eight year girl. I have a solid foundation of faith in my Lord and
savior and it makes me sick to hear of something so racist from a
person in your position. If you had said your hate about any other
group of people, such as Jews or Blacks, this news would be nation
wide. You have the constitutional right to voice your opinion, but
you also have the responsibility to serve ALL of the people that you
represent, GAY, STRAIGHT, LESBIAN, BI, TRANSGENDER, WHITE, BLACK,
REDNECK, OR A BIG FLAMING DRAG QUEEN.
I AM GAY! I HAVE THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE
PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.
Also, Kern, I’ve only know one gay person in my life who has killed
himself and that was because of all the hatred that he got from
people like YOU. The rest of the people I know that have committed
suicide, this includes my brother who hung himself in 01′, have all
been drug addicted meth addicts. Maybe your attention should be on
this rampant drug problem……and learn how to think before you
speak. I don’t remember any Gay person flying airplanes into
buildings or blowing up the Murrah building….last time I look I
though it was Terrorists and a straight, white man. I feel sorry
for you, you are suppose to spreading love and delivering a message,
christians like yourself turn more people away from God than ANY
other group of people….and that’s sad.
There is no word in biblical Greek or Hebrew that is equivalent to
the English word homosexual. The word was coined ony about 100
years ago and first appeared in the Bible in the 1946 Revised
Standard Version.

Nothing amuses me more than Bible-toting “Christians” who rattle your memorized scriptures and dim-witted nursery rhymes about Adam and Steve. Not everyone who lives in this country is Christian. Stop trying to force feed the world your own version of down-home religion. Worry about your own sins, hate and hypocracies that seem to seeps from your every pore. Prayer in school or before an athletic event? No thanks, but feel free to do that on your own time. I have known some genuinely good people that are Christians, but the majority of you are simple-minded, hate mongers who would rather see a person die if they don’t follow your redneck religious “family values”. Keep your tiresome Bible verses to yourself and let me live my life. You want freedom of speech? You got it: It is no wonder why the Romans tossed you idiots to the lions.
March 10th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
I can hardly contain the outrage and disdain I feel every time I read about some person that was voted into office, using the 1st amendment to defend their bigoted laced derision. Additionally I also am having a hard time understanding how on one hand the Church clings to it’s traditional dogmas and it’s unwaivering sensiblities, and yet somehow the Vatican is now “revising” it’s sin list to include contemporary issues. STOP TALKING OUT OF BOTH SIDES OF YOUR PROVERBIAL FACES! Oh and know one seems to have a problem with the fact that the Pope is a NAZI!
I think the more Christian you proclaim yourself to is directly proportional to how much of a mindless, brainwashed moron you are. I really wish the Rapture was real, so the rest of us could be rid of you bible thumping, christian coalition, right wing hypocrites!
I get that they’re many individuals who are uncomfortable with homosexuality. TOO EFING BAD!!! What are gay people doing to you that you have to unburden yourself of your hangups. If you idiot’s actually stepped down from your high horse, you’d realize that most of the crimes which nearly everyone would deem as immoral acts, are committed by HETEROsexuals.
Does Sally Kern realize she looks just like Gene Hackman in drag in The Bird Cage.

I was shocked after watching this video. I can’t believe anyone would talk like this, specially someone with public reach.
You say you’re not gay bashing, but gay bashing is not only physical but also made with words. Words can be more hurtful and harsher than beating someone up. With your words Rep. Sally Kern you have beaten a lot of U.S citizens up.
It is sad to see how your lack of knowledge and distorted judgment has affected a whole population. You’re generalizing a group of people by some that have made horrible mistakes. The same mistakes that other “normal” people have made. You will always find good and bad in every group, every religion, every ethnicity, every human being, even YOU!
With these words, you have definitely shown your BAD/BASHING side.
We deserve an apology. We have families, we love, we are equal, we have rights, we also want the best for our country - for everyone to be free and accepted.
Read, educate yourself and ask opinions before you make such a hurtful statement.
I’m sorry for you.

March 10th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
Ms Kerns’s comments are NOT hate speech but merely the truth that society continues to ignore at our collective peril. The demise of the Romans and the Greeks a millenium or two ago attests to this. Whether she has exact facts from the Bible is irrelevant - the facts are in the study of history which we may be doomed to repeat. Those that think she is not speaking in the public interest are deluding themselves to maintain an agenda in their own self-interest. And - she is being contacted to tell her she is correct on this issue.
You moron, the downfall of the Romans and the Greeks had nothing to do with homosexuality. You should research history before making asinine statements like this and make a fool of yourself.
The Roman empire expanded too much and was weakened by this. Oh, and along with the lead plumbing, disease and pollution problems in Rome and major Roman cities.
As for the Greeks, they were conquered by the Romans. DUH.

Dear Ms Kern,
I do believe you have the right to express your opinion (as a citizen) as well as the opinions of those you represent (as a member of the house) on the issue of homosexuality or the gay agenda, or any other social phenomena that is of concern to our community and nation.
However, I believe that as a professing Christian, you have an obligation to show compassion and to speak the truth with love. This means that there is a fine line between standing for what is biblical, yet not being judgemental. This means showing compassion to those struggling with homosexuality -whether they admit it or not- and adressing their suffering and misery in positive terms, and in the same passion as the one you are showing in defending the rest of society. For every condemnation statement to the ’sin of homosexuality’, there should be a compassionate statement and a true desire to help those suffering from it. Otherwise, this is a judgemental attitude that is not in line with true Christian values of love.

March 10th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
I am a Jewish person by heritage, and must give my opinion on this issue because I’ve studied the New Testament a bit. I believe Sally Kerns may not have said things the right way or in the right forum, but I do not believe that disagreeing with someone’s lifestyle, or making statements on the basis of research, means you hate them. All gays seem to think that as soon as someone disagrees with you, it is hate.
However, I have many friends who are Christians, who aren’t Christians, who are conservative and even those who are a little more liberal, who agree with me on this: The push (and there IS a push) for the gay lifestyle to not only be tolerated and accepted but applauded and taught is getting out of hand. We (straight people) do feel a definite push, to the point where we are not allowed to say anything – even if we love you enough to share the horrible, dangerous health statistics that put your life in jeopardy. You simply don’t want to hear it. But WE on the other hand, any which way we turn we are hearing about how cool and in it is to be gay. We can’t get away from it! Every TV show – every movie – it’s unending any more. And anyone who feels it is getting to be too much is portrayed as hateful.
Don’t forget – Rosie O’Donnell also compared Christians and other conservatives to terrorists – and no big deal was made about that!
Here is my response to some other writers at this site:
Rhys says:
“My being gay does not affect a single person in the world except for me. You don’t have to like the idea of two men or two women being together romantically, but for God’s sake, keep it to yourself!”
Then please keep the gay parades like in San Francisco, with the nudity and obscenity and lude sex acts, out of the street and to yourself.
“You don’t see us out there protesting straight rights or straight marriage or straight happiness, so why are people so adamant about protesting ours?”
Yes, I HAVE seen protests of straight rights! I even have GAY workmates I am friends with who feel this way – who don’t agree with portions of the gay community who push and push for more and more special rights against the straight lifestyle and in the public education system!
Example: Where I live for a while we had an All-City Choir. Anyone was allowed. But that wasn’t enough. A Gay Alliance formed a GAY ONLY City Choir. Is that fair?
“Just leave us alone and let us live our lives the way we want to.”
But the gay activists are not leaving others alone! When I was in college, I was pressured and pressured again and again to “try being gay”; “why don’t you do it? You might like it?” It was almost non-stop.
My children, my friends and the kids of my friends are being pressured not to believe in anything else but to applaud and even put the gay lifestyle on a pedestal and keep their mouths shut. Almost every subject in school or in the workplace is being infused with gay rights. And those who don’t agree are mercilessly ostracized and reprimanded.
OK – you should have rights – but do we need to hear about it everywhere? And must others be attacked at every turn? Your screams for tolerance are creating a whole NEW intolerance…toward anyone who doesn’t agree with you.
“Who I happen to love has no affect on you whatsoever…will NEVER have any kind of negative impact on your life.”
Yes it does. Just see all of the above comments I have made to your comments.
To the people on this thread who quoted Leviticus -
Everyone just always quotes Leviticus in the Old Testament, But JESUS himself said in Mark 10:6-8: “God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be united to his wife…” and in both Matthew 6:31-32 and Mark 10:10-12 Jesus speaks of marriage and divorce being between a man and a woman, clearly using feminine and masculine terms. It is clear he never considers man with man or woman with woman. …See also Romans 1:22-32 – around verse 26 it begins getting very explicit. Some gays, even those who believe the Bible, often claim that the apostle Paul was “off on his own agenda” when he wrote this in Romans. But we can’t believe the Bible in a “line item veto” way – just removing what we don’t like.
McVicker says:
“The only people I have ever known to push an agenda or a lifestyle are the right-wing Christian fundamentalists.”
That is untrue. Sally Kerns may have been wrong in the WAY she said things, but the gay agenda is indeed being pushed in the school system. It is too much to go into here, but I could site book after book, poem after poem, presentation after presentation going on the school system today. Here’s two examples: “King and King” which is now becoming required elementary school reading. Parents have gone all the way to court for permission to take their children out of class when this is being read. They’ve been told they have NO RIGHT. Poems like “My Mommy’s High Heels” in which the gay (or at least cross-dressing child) says that when he grows up he is going to behead all those who don’t disagree with him! Books like “Daddy’s Roommate” that state ‘mommy and daddy fought and got a divorce, but daddy and Fred will never fight”. Come on. If that’s not indoctrination I don’t know what is. And this is allowed because of the immense pressure and lobbying done by gay & lesbian groups to the point that legislators and educators just give you whatever you want to get you to leave them alone.
March 10th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Here we go again. One more hateful, uneducated bigot in goverment. It is funny how there is to be a seperation between church and state, but Kern”s seems to be pushing her own agenda on everyone else. All peoples in these United States are created equal, no matter what their race, sexual preference or faith is. They say that one in ten people are gay, that would mean that at least on person in Kern’s own family is gay or bi. How would she react to one of her own family being openly gay. Why does she think she is all high and mighty and can try to push her own personal views on all of us. It is time to take the Bigots out of goverment.

I do not believe Christianity, Jesus, or God is anti-gay. A huge part of Christian beliefs is to not judge anyone. I am a Christian, and have many wonderful homosexual friends who are also Christian. I think it is sad that Kern would, under the guise of Christianity, say such narrow-minded and judgemental things. However, she does have the freedom to say what she believes, and she should not have to appologize for being anti-gay. It is how she feels and in the same way that people are allowed to choose to be gay, straight, or bisexual, she is allowed to choose to be anti-gay, anti-straight, or anti-bisexual. Expressing her opinion is her right. If you don’t agree with her, just don’t vote for her.
March 10th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Pray for this woman. She needs a real encounter with Jesus Christ. There are many “Christians” that have realized that there is no “GAY LIFE STYLE”. Many gay men and lesbian women attend church every week, have children and contribute to our society. The sad fact is that she has been taught to hate and even if she is faced with truth, she would rather live in ignorance.
There is a swingers club not to far from my home where heterosexuals meet, but I don’t see her type of Christian beating their doors down. People such as Sally use the Bible to beat poeple down and destroy lives, instead of lifting people up and offering the love of God. So many scriptures have been taken out of context to meet the need of hate. ie. the word Sodomite that is so often used to describe homosexuals, actually means MALE TEMPLE PROSTITUTE, not homosexual. But then to understand these things you would actually have to study this for yourself and not live off of the hate you have been spoon fed.
If the same Bible is true, we must love poor Sally and pray that she doesn’t have to reap too much for the harm she has done.
March 10th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
If ms. kerns is specifically speaking about mary cheney and karl rove, then I agree. These gay individuals are certainly a threat to America, though their homosexuality has nothing to do with it.
March 10th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
I would not equate homosexuality with terrorism, however I do believe that it is problem. If Rep. Kern is speaking for what she truly believes in based upon her faith, what right do homosexuals (and those who support them) have to tell her to retract her statement. It is such a double standard, liberals are able to espouse views and beliefs and are never called out to apologize. Yet a conservative can make one gaffe and offend a group of people then be asked to apologize. It is not fair and I hope that Rep. Kern does NOT back down from her stance.
March 10th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
I don’t care who you are or what you say, if our Maker and Creator and the One who Is going to judge each and every one of us( you can believe this or not, you’ll find out in the end, hopefully not too late) says homosexuality if wrong, IT IS WRONG! People accept any thing in this day and age and it is time to STOP, I hope Rep. Kern does not apologize, it isn’t her rules but the Lord God Almighty’s Laws, deal with it or be judged accordingly. This nation is going to hell in a handbasket, and again, whether I like it, or not, or anyone else likes it, we have a God who has Laws, if I or you, do not live accordingly, we WILL pay, people don’t like this message, as it puts restrictions on them and heaven forbid that “anyone will tell me how to live!” You can be anything in this world, gay, straight, a murderer, a rapist, etc, just don’t believe in One God, we who do, are being targeted, you can have any opionion, as long as it has nothing to do with God. Watch out Rep. Kern, as the enemy will strike hard now that you have taken a stand for what it TRULY RIGHT. Satan and all of his followers don’t like the TRUTH!

This idiot does not speak for me in any shape, way or form. People, please have her removed from public office, she is an EXTREME embarrasment to humankind !!!
Judgement will ONLY be done by “THE” higher power, not by some Physco using their state and ferdal offices for hate meetings(WHICH WE PAY FOR !!!!). Read your bible lady. No, I mean really, really read your bible. You need to educate yourself and fire whoever supplies you with these bogus statistics.
March 10th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
What I think is just as disturbing about her anti-gay hate-speech is what she says about Islam and how it is a huge threat in America. Terrorism is an issue, yes, but..surprise! Someone being Muslim does not automatically mean that they’re a terrorist! And vice versa, someone being a terrorist does not automatically mean they’re Muslim! So how can Islam, a RELIGION, just like Christianity is a religion, be an “threat”? Looks like she’s pretty ignorant about more things than just homosexuality!
And I thought being Christian meant that you believe strongly in acceptance and tolerance? Clearly not for her.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but when it comes to hateful, damaging, and hurtful opinions like hers, she should keep them to herself. This woman should not be in office, nothing good can come from it. It’s 2008, let’s try to be a little more openminded!
March 10th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
It is clear with your recent comments that you are unable to perform your civil duties that includes a separation of church and state. With that in mind, I call for you to step down from your PUBLIC OFFICE as you are not fit to serve in a Democracy. If you wish to seek office within your bigoted, hate-filled church, that is your prerogative, but we have no room in our government for politicians who wish to commit genocide on an entire group of people due to YOUR religious views.
Yes, you have freedom of speech, but YOUR freedom ends where MY freedom begins. There is a big difference in freedom of speech and practicing hate speech. You do not have the right to shout “fire” in a crowded theater and you do not have the right to disenfranchise an entire segment of the population by spreading such offensive, uncivil hatred based on some hypocritical view you have of a God that you don’t know. If you KNEW God, you would know that the words you spoke are not in line with His message or His teachings.
You have no business serving the public when it is clear that you despise those you are supposed to serve.
I call for your immediate resignation from public service, an apology to the gay community and removing yourself from any further public appearance. You disgust me and sadden me in your hatred and your unchristian behaviors from someone who professes to be a Christian. You are no more a Christian than I am a Pontiac Grand Prix, for going to church makes you no more a Christian than sitting in a garage makes you an automobile.
May God have mercy on your blackened, hate-filled soul. Beg for forgiveness from Him for your words of hatred against His children, repent and remove yourself from office. You are not fit to serve and when your term is up, you will no longer be in politics of any sort because people do will not elect a bigot such as you to any office now that they see your ugly, demonic soul and the horns sprouting from your head. You stepped over the line both civilly and religiously. I will pray for you that God open your eyes to your bigotry and bring you to your knees before him in repentance.
It is people like YOU who give REAL CHRISTIANS a bad name.

Of course she is entitled to her opinion - the problem is she is asserting matters of ugly opinion as fact. Thats deeply disturbing. It is the way to feed the beast of ignorance - when people that are clothed in a cover of respectibility (an elected state Representative, a former schoolteacher)pass on such views as make up facts.
Seriously - that is how the extreemists operate throughout the world and have doen throughout history.
She puts herseld (and her supporters) in some VERY undistinguished compay by pedaling such foul hate-filled speech. This woman is no Christian.

Also - If she really has no apology for her comments - because they are simply what she believes and has the right ro her beliefs - then why did she try to say it only in secret, hidden from public comment?
Her refusal to apoligize is yet more lying and making things up to justify her hate.

I’m from Oklahoma, and I have to say I am so glad I just turned 18 so I can vote people like this out of office. She does not speak on behalf of Oklahomans whatsoever.
This is the same kind of propaganda people spread about Jews throughout various disgraceful points in history. It’s this type of thinking that resulted in a holocaust.
March 10th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Rep. Sally Kern has done nothing more than state the truth. Gays and lesbians are an abomination and a detriment to this country. If the news media would canvas america in places other than cities which are a cess pool of perversion, they would find that a great many people have the same feelings as she. Tolerance only goes so far. When it impinges on my right to state my feelings, that’s where I draw the line.

As far as the fall of Greece and Rome goes (?), how about the Renaissance? It was a completely secular return to the learning and culture of Greco-Roman society and shaped what we are today. The kind of speech that Sally Kern spews forth is indicative of her ignorance (?) and fear (”those who scream loudest”). I think she dreams of dinner with Janet Reno and Donna Shalala, but what do I know?
March 10th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Oh, and to Jay. As for your question concerning the morality of being gay (based on the fact that two members of the same sex can’t create a human being), I certainly hope that you can someday experience having sex strictly for fun. Why did your god make it feel so good? We do other things like lemmings because we know that we must. Why didn’t god make procreation just so-so? Or have you already enjoyed sex? Well, Jay, if you’ve had sex twice, you can probably say which one felt better. Did you want to do it again? Oh, that’s right; spank me! It’s not my business.
March 10th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Wow…I am sickened by this woman. Her remarks are representative of a worldwide epidemic of hatred and ignorance for each and every one of us who dares to be an individual. Whether it’s anti-gay sentiment, or any other prejudice of any sort, the words vomited out of this woman’s mouth are simply unacceptable. This should only reinforce the determination of humans across the planet to shut out the hate and stand with iron fists at ignorant, fundamentalist creatures like her.
Sally Kern, you are a disgrace to the human race. Your sick, sordid words have been heard and will not be tolerated. You can run, but do not dare to hide, because we have all heard. You are a bigot of the greatest kind, and I sincerely hope you open up your eyes to the outrage you have caused and feel the shame of the world looking down on you.
March 10th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
EVERY one of those stupid comments she made were all first made by people like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Mr. Dobson, etc., and all those self-righteous “christians.” People like her can’t think for themselves and they have given up their God-given right to reason for themselves. And people who agree with her are just as guilty. And that kind of speech IS what Hitler used to get people to hate the Jews in Germany. We have to face the fact that we aren’t really a very Christian country, though we LOVE to say that we are. But, talk is cheap and our actions speak louder than words. She talks about what the bible says… My bible and, in particular, MY Jesus was always speaking out against the hypocrites. He talked about not judging and loving all people, even your enemies, and He showed it in his everyday life when he associated himself with people that the scripture-thumpers didn’t like. She’s pathetic and I feel sorry for her because she chooses to be ignorant and weak minded. I’d like to see the “studies” she talks about. Oh, by the way, those horrible gay folks are also fighting in Iraq so that people like her can continue their HATE SPEECH. Shame on her. She needs to go to a REAL church that preaches what Jesus lived!

Dear Sally,
The 19th Century just called — it misses you and wants you to come home.

The characterization of opinions that disagree with yours as “hate” is demagoguery. The presumption that the listener can “make up” the motivation of a speaker is foolish and dangerous. Free speech implies the concept that you most likely won’t agree with the speaker, otherwise there would be no need to safeguard the speaker’s right to say what they will. Three cheers for Representative Kern!

If America is going to diminish in power it’s because the country is falling apart no matter what. Homosexuality has nothing to do with it I think, so Rep. Kern’s beliefs are statements of desperation.
My question is: does America perhaps need to decline in power and influence?

It’s been said that ignorance is bliss. That doesn’t apply here. With this tunnel-visioned state legislator, ignorance is plain ignorance.

Interestingly, Ms. Kern is incorrect in her ascertation that civilizations who embraced gay lifestyles were doomed to last
