      Some hope with the sadness

      By jmb | November 29, 2003

That last post seems a bit bleak to me on further thought, so I want to tell about some of the good news that is going on right now.

I have been reading an excellent book (Ideas for Action: Relevant Theory for Radical Change by Cynthia Kaufman — btw, thanks go out to South End Press for sending me a copy of this book. I will write a full-length review of this book once I have time.) —- This book is helping me to understand some things that have been kicking around in my mind for a while without much satisfaction, particularly by giving me a theoretical backing for many of my own convictions concerning the unjust way this world seems to be running right now.

I still have a ways to go on the book (and a long, long ways to go into considering it more fully in the context of my own experiences and thoughts), but at this point it is becoming clear to me how I want to live my life, in pursuit of a better society (and really more accurately better communities) where everyone is treated right and no one is oppressed. It is a big elephant (the capitalist system as implemented by our corporate-militaristic society) to chew but I think it is one that can be brought down, not by revolution or violence of any kind, but rather by peaceful actions of hopeful defiance focused on grassroots organizing in local communities.

I have no idea what that will look like but I do know it is somethign I want to live out now and something I want my future career to be spent in the servivce of. I also would go as far as to say that this kind of life would be one that for me would best reflect my faith in God and my understanding of the world that Jesus said was possible in his teachings.
